Monrovia, Liberia, July 30, 2026, Former Liberian President and Political Leader of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), George Manneh Weah Sr, has officially declared his intention to contest the 2029 presidential election, telling supporters that the CDC is united, energized, and determined to return to power.
Speaking at the CDC USA Convention, Weah announced that he would seek the party’s mandate to run for the presidency, describing his decision as one driven by his commitment to Liberia and the supporters who have remained loyal to the party.
”I speak these words as your political leader. I speak them as your brother, as your servant, and as a man whose heart has never once left this movement,” Weah said.
He continued: “Today, I declare that I will be a candidate for the presidency of the Republic of Liberia in 2029. With your support, your blessings, and the mandate of the Congress for Democratic Change, I make this declaration.”
The former president said he decided to seek another term after witnessing what he described as the deterioration of the country since leaving office.
”I make this declaration because I have watched, alongside you, as everything we labored to build has been placed at risk. I refuse to stand on the sidelines while our country is dismantled before our eyes,” he told delegates.
Addressing CDC partisans at home and abroad, Weah praised supporters for standing with the party through difficult times and urged them to remain committed as preparations begin for the next electoral cycle.
”You, the partisans who have never wavered, who have carried this battle through storm after storm, across oceans and across years, deserve a fight that matches your loyalty,” he said.
The former president also sought to reassure supporters that he remained connected to their struggles.
”Wherever you are, whatever your circumstances, know this: I am with you. I hear you. Together, we will finish what we have started.”
Weah pledged that a future CDC administration would focus on protecting democracy, restoring public institutions, and rebuilding Liberia.
”We will protect our democracy. We will restore our institutions. We will rebuild our beloved Liberia bigger, stronger, and more united than ever before,” he declared.
He insisted that the CDC remains a formidable political force despite its defeat in the 2023 elections.
”The movement built by the people cannot be destroyed. The movement built on hope cannot be defeated by setbacks. The movement rooted in the hearts and minds of ordinary Liberians cannot be erased,” Weah said.
Declaring confidence in the party’s future, he added: “The CDC is alive. The CDC is united. The CDC is organized. The CDC is energized. The CDC is strong. And the CDC is coming back to power.”
Calling on party members to begin preparations for the next election, Weah emphasized unity and mobilization.
”We are gathered not only to celebrate the past but to prepare for the future—to mark the beginning of the next chapter, a chapter of renewal, a chapter of reorganization, and a chapter of victory.”
”From this moment forward, every citizen, every opposition supporter, and every CDC partisan must prepare for the political battle ahead. This is not the time for division. This is not the time for complacency. This is the time for mobilization. This is the time to march forward.”
He concluded by urging supporters to spread the party’s message across the country.
”Let the message leave here today. Let it travel across every county, every district, every town, and every village. The mighty CDC is coming back.”
Weah ended his address by invoking God’s blessings upon the CDC and the Republic of Liberia, declaring, “May God bless the Congress for Democratic Change, and may God bless Liberia.”
